Most of us have heard of the term SEO but what does it actually mean, it stands for Search Engine Optimization. This means it is a way to increase the search engine rank of your website which could result in a higher page rank in the search engine results.

There are as you probably know, several internet search engines available, people do have their favourites and you use them in order to visit the website of your interest. Getting a high page rank can indirectly increase the volume to your website. Being listed higher can boost your business because they can find you more easily. SEO is based on the content of your website having keywords in.

The user then types a keyword, relevant to what they are searching for into the search engine which should then result in your website being listed for that keyword. There are other things that also help your SEO and these can include website presentation and website coding. Apart from the SEO aspect it can also be more appealing to the visitor.

If you think that your website could do with some SEO work please don’t hesitate to call.

Gooogle announced today that it has made a change to its algorithm that is supposed to make it easier to find multiple pages from a single site.

“For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain, like [exhibitions at amnh], we’ll now show more results from the relevant site,” says Google software engineer Samarth Keshava. ”

Prior to today’s change, only two results from www.amnh.org would have appeared for this query. Now, we determine that the user is likely interested in the Museum of Natural History’s website, so seven results from the amnh.org domain appear. Since the user is looking for exhibitions at the museum, it’s far more likely that they’ll find what they’re looking for, faster. The last few results for this query are from other sites, preserving some diversity in the results.”

“We’re always reassessing our ranking and user interface, making hundreds of changes each year,” adds Keshava. “We expect today’s improvement will help users find deeper results from a single site, while still providing diversity on the results page.”

This change may prove to be helpful for a lot of searches, but they could still do more in this area if you ask me. For example, they could rank tag pages (commonly used on news sites and blogs) as top results for appropriate searches.

As a business owner especially in the current climate – you’ll know how important it is for your business to have a strong online presence.

It’s vital you understand the importance of getting your website listed within the search engines when relevant keywords are typed in. After all, most users do not look past page 1 so, if you aren’t there you are not harnessing the potential of the web for your company.
Of course it takes a fair bit of effort and understanding in order to achieve desired results andto master SEO.

Let our expertise guide you through the basics and help you kick start your SEO journey with Webs For Everyone.

Most Internet marketers walk a fine line when it comes to their e-mail marketing campaigns. While we can all vouch for the effectiveness of e-mail marketing, the tactics used in the list building process are sometimes questionable, if not downright unethical. Never fear – you can work around this and build a profitable list in less time than you think!

It took a lot of trial and error, but I found that there are a handful of things a marketer can do to build a successful e-mail list a little faster than most. Today I’ll share my five favourite tips – and they just so happen to be amongst the easiest I’ve used!

1. Design a squeeze page

A squeeze page is a marketing page that gives a little bit of teaser information about your product, services, newsletters, and giveaways. You’ll use this page to blatantly and shamelessly ask your visitors to leave their names and e-mail addresses in exchange for the information they’ve been looking for. Follow up with your promises and e-mail the information you guaranteed right away. Otherwise, your new prospects won’t trust you and will quickly remove themselves from your list.

2. Create an effective signature and always use it
At this point in your career you should be including a descriptive signature and a link to your website or signup page at the bottom of every e-mail you send. You’ll also want to set up descriptive signatures for use on message boards and forums. The more you tell people about yourself, the more interested they’ll be.

3. Start a viral marketing campaign.
Simply put, viral marketing means your information is being spread via word of mouth. If, for example, you send an e-mail offering a free gift or product, you might include a link at the bottom which makes it easy for your current subscribers to tell a friend or family member about the products you have available. That friend will join your list while at the same time sending the original message to her friends, and so on. Viral marketing is free and takes little more than a creative pitch.

4. Implement an article marketing campaign
Write a few informational articles and publish them in online article directories and ezines. At the end of each article you’re going to include a 2-3 line biography about yourself with a link to your web page. If your reader wants more information, he’ll have to go to your page and join your e-mail list.

5. Use strong keywords on your website
Most people find the things they are looking for after performing a simple Google search. Make sure that they find your website by using appropriate niche keywords within your website or blog content. Doing so will cause your web page to appear closer to the top of the search engine result pages!

These list building methods are tried and tested. Better yet, they’re free. Implement one at a time until you are able to determine which one is working best.

A flash website that was recently updated with major improvements could be just the thing for your kids during our great British Summer holidays..

Moshi Monsters is a great game that many children enjoy. The game designed by Mind Candy is well put together and is a good way to keep up maths and other skills during summer holidays.

The great thing from a parents point of view is that the daily challenge, that gains the child some Roxs (the local currency) is a combination of word, number and other puzzles. This is run against the clock. The more correct questions you answer the more Roxs you win. Also as you build up your ‘level line’ you move through from the first level to the sceonds, third and so on. At the end of each level you get a trophy. This helps with the sense of achievement as another reward for the puzzles (other than the Roxs).

Your monster lives in a room, these rooms can be fully customised by visiting Ukea, Horrods, Bizarre Bizarre. Like other ‘caring for pet’ games, you must feed the monster and tickle him (or her) to keep them happy.

Monsters room

This room belong to ‘hairymatt’ who has filled it with a robot, dinosaur and so many other things I can’t keep track of them.

Each room also contains the necessary ‘Social Media’ tools, a friends tree and a message board.br />
Surprisingly these kids really know how to communicate with the message board. There is also a great competition to gather the most friends on your friends tree. Although I find this is more obvious when they play with school friends in real life, rather than on the message boards.

Navigation around monster land is simple thanks to a great map, which the kids just click on

Navigate around with the monster land map

As with many of these things there is the opportunity to become a ‘member’, for a fee. Certain areas of the map are off limits to regular ‘free accounts’ but my kids certainly have plenty of fun with the free account.

Big bonus if the puzzles keep them going and although a little help with one or two of them is sometimes required, on the whole it is a well put together site which is great fun for them

If you find that your colours feel a bit mixed up and you struggle to know what to put with your primary colours to find an effective composition, then you may be in luck !

The Colour Scheme Designer could be just the thing you are looking for.

It has a neat user interface and is really simple to use, you simply select the primary colour you wish to use and then it’ll demonstate colours that tone with or work with your chosen colour.

Once you are happy that this is the colour scheme you are looking for, you can choose the expert HTML and CSS from the top menu and voila a new page open up. This page will display the colours complete with HTML hex codes that allow you to see your colours clearly. You can even view source and copy and paste the style information directly into your style sheet for easy reference.

Here are two images that should help illustrate what I have just been explaining.

Colour Scheme Designer

The exported HTML colour scheme

Why not try out the colour scheme planner ? It is fun and one of those tools that you muck about with ‘just for fun’ and then oneday it you use it to choose colours or to give inspiration where you need to move outside of your usual colour choices.

Every wise web designer or developer knows that their webiste is going to look a little different in the wide variety of web browsers that are now avaliable. The probelm usually presents itself with the older browsers.

Most of us have a copy of the main browsers, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome. We may even have back copies of Explorer 6 and 7. However you never know what you visitors are going to use to view your client’s new website, unless you are ucky enough to have some good web stats given to you at the start of your project.

You may look good all the time, but your new website might not

Browsershots makes screenshots of your web design in different browsers. It is a free open-source online service created by Johann C. Rocholl. When you submit your web address, it will be added to the job queue. A number of distributed computers will open your website in their browser. Then they will make screenshots and upload them to the central server here.

You can find Browershots at http://browsershots.org/.

This is a good resource and worth using for those projects where your back catalogue of web browsers is not quite enough.

I have made plenty of websites where you use an image as a link. This could be as an image ‘submit’ button in a form, or an arrow to click for next item.
My lovely design is somewhat ruined by the dotted line that appears around the image when it is clicked by the site visitor.

Usually this is not an issue if you’ll soon be leaving the page. The big problem is when you use the link to ‘show’ or ‘hide’ information. This means the site visitor is still looking at the page while your javascript and CSS are hiding or revealing your additional information or next picture.

This is the sort of thing I am talking about.

This type of dotted outline is really annoying and spoils your nicely crafted buttons or other images used as links.

You can spend a little while diligently using style=”border:none” as part of the image tag and it will make no difference. Don’t worry, help is at hand !!

This CSS code will remove the dotted outline.

a {
outline: none;
}

Having applied that code to your style sheet information and uploaded it to your website, if you view the image again and click on it the dotted line is gone !!

However please remember that the outline is used for accessibility purposes so ‘a:focus’ should be added to your CSS stylesheet also. This will then replace the removed style. Most people will choose to make this the same as the ‘a:hover’ style.
